The University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health produced a graph charting the average lifespan in Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods. At the top of the list was Highland Park whose average lifespan was reported as 85 years of age. At the bottom of the list is Larimer with an average lifespan of 63 years of age. These two communities are separated by less than three
hundred yards.
The Plus-10 Initiative will work to reduce this differential by 10 years, providing nutrition education, cooking demonstrations and recipes led by our chefs and nutritionists by addressing many of the sources of the most prevalent chronic diseases. High school culinary students will shadow chefs in the process, where they can receive additional skills that can be utilized in
homes of young families and also facilitating a pipeline where culinary interests can be broadened. These are the benefits when you join the P-10 team!
Flourishing Communities is recruiting individuals who want to “eat” their way to normal blood pressures, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. You will be contacted with all program information.
Flourishing Communities, along with its partner Food21, is launching an initiative to address food insecurity, community well-being and the corollate health implications. This collaborative is called the Plus-10 initiative. Plus-10 is so named because it sets a goal of increasing the average life expectancy by 10 years as an outcome, roughly the median between the Highland Park and Larimer communities.
The Plus 10 Initiative will focus on helping residents make better informed decisions related to eating habits amid food insecurity, even with improved access to quality food. Features of the Plus-10 Initiative include:
· Community Advisory Committee of residents and stakeholders
· Education
· Community Engagement
· Advocacy
